inquiry questions - lets just think about this

Today we began thinking deeply about exploring our wonderings from our recent thinking. We have been watching clips on Cacao bean plantations and child trafficking on the Ivory Coast of Africa. The students are beginning to explore in pairs their own questions. Yes, we've been thinking HARD about what is going on in the world.

Sharing our quick writes.

Today we welcomed Ms Parker and Room 11 to our learning space.
For the next week we are going to be working on our quick writes with the objective of sharing them together next Thursday. There was a mixture of excited chatter and nervous laughter as the two classes got to n ow each other. Together they debated pictures to write about and used very persuasive language to convince the rest of the group to choose their age to spend time writing about.  Thanks for the visit  Rm 11, see you next week!

Learning attributes used during the Marble Challenge

Learning Attributes During Marble Challenge I worked in a group with _____ and _____. Although we didn’t always get along very well we tried our best. Here are some of the attributes we used or should have. I could have done better with self direction; If I saw a problem I would just fix it but sometimes I wouldn’t be as confident and questioned everything. When we were getting to the end I started to doubt our creation. Working as a team brainstorming, discussing ideas and questioning was easy. But order was the hard part. We forgot to follow the design process and had to go back to see what we missed (Re-search). We reflected on our work and attitudes but sometimes we got annoyed and said things that weren’t entirely true. This happened near the end when things didn’t go the way we had hoped they would. One of the problems that occurred was when the beginning of our roller coaster didn’t work to our standard. We resolved this obstacle when we put our heads together and worked together with our differences behind us. One of our risk taking moments was when we decided to take out the loop because most of the roller coasters consisted of them. We took it out because it was time consuming and wasn’t necessary. I used the attribute of open mindedness when I let other people use their or modify and dismiss mine. For example I let ________ use her water feature idea instead of the cushion. I think my time managing could’ve been better. We did finish on time but it was rushed and stressful. Next time I would do it in order and set time limits for myself. Following the design process could have been better. We did do all of the steps but we did them in the wrong order. This project was fun but challenging. It was difficult because we were working with new people and when it started malfunctioning. We tried our best though. We enjoyed ourselves. Over all I think we did well and next time we will listen to each others ideas and make sure everyone knew what we were doing.

Quick Writes

Quick Writing by Aidan Reid

Day 1:Dialog.

▒ Bird 1 “There Doesn’t seem to be any fish today”
▒ Bird 2 “Shut up you’re probably scaring them away”
▒ Bird 3 “This is why I only eat one fish a day, now they’re all dead because you guys are greedy”
▒ Bird 4 “We all only eat one fish a day”
▒ Bird 5 “Stop shouting you’re fluffing up & squishing me”
▒ Bird 6 “I’m Older & I’m telling you all to shut up”
▒ Bird 7 “It was probably those selfish humans stealing all the fish, I mean just look over there”

Day 2:Caption. ‘The Kingfisher Council’ debates an invasion

Day 3:Headlines.
Kingfishers Invade 3 Countries

Day 4:Memoir. ▒▒§▒▒

I was chosen to join the demolitions battalion when the Invasion plan was decided. My fellow birds & I’s job was to use feather bombs and gas bombs to create cover for the ariel strike birds on the 9th branch. Each of us were nervous about our part, I could tell because I could feel them all huddling closer & shuddering when the commanding officer flew by. The question that was in each of our heads was were we going to complete our part, or ruin the invasion. ▒▒§▒▒

Day 5:Letter.

To: The Human Leaders We are giving you a chance to surrender yourselves because as you have seen we’re more powerful than you and could continue this war, but we would prefer a more peaceful conquer.

A little inquiry activity today

Today we have been calculating the speed of our marbles over a 2 meter distance. The students had to use their time, distance, speed activity they learnt on Tuesday. There was lots of discussion and discovery occurring! We then added a ramp and discovered this actually slowed down the bigger marble. So now our discussion point is WHY did this happen? What forces are in action here?
